Xianyu (闲鱼, literally «Idle Fish»), operated by Alibaba Group, is China’s preeminent marketplace for pre-owned goods, excess inventory, collectible items, and consumer electronics. Unlike unmoderated classifieds, Xianyu is deeply woven into the Alipay financial ecosystem and the Sesame credit scoring infrastructure.

Profiles containing dozens of identical smartphones or GPUs at below-market prices represent commercial refurbishers masking repairs.

Scrutinize listing imagery. Authentic owners photograph items on household desks, floors, or balconies with natural lighting, openly displaying minor scratches and scuffs. Listings relying solely on pristine commercial product renderings or catalog screenshots should be avoided.

The most significant difference between Xianyu and retail marketplaces like Taobao or JD is return policy. For private peer-to-peer sales, China’s statutory 7-day no-reason return rule does NOT apply. Listings routinely state «个人闲置，不退不换» (personal idle goods, no returns or exchanges).

Returning an item and reclaiming escrow funds is permissible only if significant non-conformity is proven upon delivery (e.g., an authentic screen was promised but a low-grade replacement was installed, or the device fails to boot) and the buyer initiates a dispute BEFORE confirming receipt.
