Returning Goods to Sellers in China: Eligibility, Domestic Rules and Warehouse Verification

Under Chinese consumer protection law, retail shoppers benefit from the mandatory 7-day unconditional return policy (七天无理由退货). This applies to retail transactions on Taobao, Tmall, and JD.com. Within seven calendar days of delivery, the buyer has the legal right to return goods.

The indispensable prerequisite for an unconditional return is preserving the commercial presentation of the item: no signs of wear, intact factory seals, attached tags, and undamaged retail packaging.

The law specifically excludes perishable items, custom-made goods, digital downloads, and personal hygiene items. Furthermore, the 7-day countdown commences strictly when the courier delivers the package to the receiver address in China.

Unlike retail, the wholesale portal 1688.com is governed by commercial B2B contract standards where unconditional 7-day returns are not mandatory for all sellers. Each manufacturer defines its return terms individually on the product page.

If a product listing features the badge «支持7天无理由退货», the factory accepts unconditional returns. In the absence of this badge, returns are strictly limited to verified platform dispute grounds: manufacturing defects, incorrect item/color/size, or missing items.

Batches manufactured under custom orders (OEM/ODM) — featuring custom logos, unique tailoring, or customized retail boxes — cannot be returned if the factory complied with agreed technical specifications.

Domestic courier charges for returns within China follow clear platform dispute resolution rules. If the return is initiated by customer preference (changed mind, unneeded items), the buyer covers the return courier cost.

The decisive factor in managing returns is executing verification before cargo departs China. Once goods leave Chinese borders, cross-border returns become economically unfeasible: international freight, re-import customs clearance, and local duties vastly exceed product value.
